JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS CLOTHING
MARK 15:19
Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. They stripped off his clothes and began to mock him, saying: “All hail, King of the Jews.”
Jesus, you endured great shame and humiliation at the hands of the powerful. We remember what you endured. We pray for those we know full of shame and guilt that they would see the freedom you offer. We pray that we would stand against the shame and stigma forced on people by our world, and find freedom for the shame in our hearts. Amen
Though artists through the centuries have depicted it otherwise, crucified people in Jesus’ time were stripped of all of their clothes. It was one more step in the process of ultimate humiliation. Imagine the embarrassment of being so exposed. When we or those we love are subjected to humiliation, we can be confident of this: Jesus knows how we feel.
